WHAT IS A DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY (DD)? A developmental disability is a severe chronic disability of which all of the following apply: 1. It is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or combination of mental and physical impairments; 2. It is manifested before age twenty-two; 3. It is likely to continue indefinitely; 4. It results in substantial functional limitations in three or more of the following major life activities: self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, self-direction, capacity for independent living, economic sufficiency. 5. It reflects the need for a sequence of both special interdisciplinary and generic care, treatments, or other services, and this need will be either life long or of an extended duration, requiring planning and coordination specific to the individual being treated.
